DESIGNING THE IDENTITY
FOR BACKSTAGE PLAYMAKERS
Backstage Playmakers is a theatre collective built around performance, storytelling, and the creative energy found behind the curtain. The identity needed to feel expressive and dramatic while remaining approachable enough to work across productions, promotional campaigns, and community-facing brand touchpoints.
The visual direction draws on stagecraft through curtain forms, backstage lighting, and a playful character mark paired with a confident lowercase wordmark. Together, these elements create a brand system that feels theatrical, memorable, and adaptable across both digital and physical applications.
THE CHALLENGE
Backstage Playmakers needed an identity that could capture the drama of live performance without becoming overly literal or cluttered. The challenge was to create a mark that felt equally suited to show posters, merchandise, social promotion, and long-term brand recognition across a growing theatre programme.
The solution was to build a narrative-led symbol around the moment before the spotlight—using stage curtains, a peeking performer, and a green-room glow to tell the story of creativity waiting in the wings, supported by a bold wordmark that could anchor the brand across every touchpoint.
A LOGO BUILT AROUND STORYTELLING AND STAGE PRESENCE
The logo combines a compact illustrative mark with a stacked wordmark to create a distinctive theatre identity. The curtain panels frame a performer peeking from backstage, introducing a sense of anticipation, character, and narrative before a single line of copy is read.
The green-room light behind the figure adds depth and atmosphere, while the maroon curtain tones and confident black typography ground the brand in classic stage tradition. A flowing underline beneath “playmakers” gives the wordmark rhythm and personality, helping the identity feel handcrafted and performative.
BUILDING A FLEXIBLE BRAND SYSTEM
Beyond the core logo, the project included a visual system for applying the identity across campaign materials and production touchpoints. This included logo placement guidance, colour usage, typography hierarchy, and layout principles designed to keep the brand consistent across print, merchandise, and digital formats.
The resulting system allows Backstage Playmakers to show up cohesively across show posters, transit advertising, branded merchandise, social media, and event collateral—while preserving the brand’s expressive and theatre-led character.
